What is Emissions Testing in Maricopa County and What Do Catalytic Converters Do

Emissions testing is a program that is part of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.  Since the 1980's, in order to register a vehicle, you need to pass your emissions test, per Arizona law.  However, what a lot of people don't know is that if your check engine light is on, you will automatically fail the emissions test.
You will need help from someone that does auto repair to help decipher the check engine light.  One of the many causes of this enigmatic light is the catalytic converter.  But what is a catalytic converter?
According to this article except from WIKIPEDIA:
"A catalytic converter is a vehicle emissions control device that converts toxic pollutants in exhaust gas to less toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction (oxidation or reduction). Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines fueled by either petrol (gasoline) or diesel—including lean-burn engines.
The first widespread introduction of catalytic converters was in the United States automobile market. Manufacturers of 1975 model year equipped gasoline-powered vehicles with catalytic converters to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's stricter regulation of exhaust emissions.[1][2][3][4] These “two-way” converters combined carbon monoxide (CO) with unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). In 1981, two-way catalytic converters were rendered obsolete by “three-way” converters that also reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx);[1] however, two-way converters are still used for lean burn engines.
Although catalytic converters are most commonly applied to exhaust systems in automobiles, they are also used on electrical generators, forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, locomotives and motorcycles."
Temperature sensors are used for two purposes. The first is as a warning system, typically on two-way catalytic converters such as are still sometimes used on LPG forklifts. The function of the sensor is to warn of catalytic converter temperature above the safe limit of 750 °C (1,380 °F). [READ MORE]

Auto Repair in Peoria: Parts and Labor

As we covered in a previous article, going to an auto repair shop in Peoria, AZ could save you both the hassle as well as the expense of getting the wrong part for your car's problem.  Some car problems are "silent killers," for lack of a better term.  You might feel pleased that you fixed your car's problems,  not even knowing that there are parts in your car that are so worn out they should be replaced immediately.

If you continue trying auto repair on your own, you only will be exposing yourself to risk. Imagine driving at full speed on a highway when your rims are too loose or the gearbox hasn't been reattached properly.  You could end up in a potentially life-threatening car wreck.

Fixing Your Car and Avoiding Becoming a Statistic

Botched auto repair has been cited as one of the major reasons why fatal accidents occur. That's why you want to go to an auto mechanic that you can trust.  Only experts have the ability to determine whether or not the car is in a good enough condition for you to drive safely. In fact, it's wise to allow them to test it on the road so that you can be sure that everything is okay. The good thing is that regardless of whether you live in the Valley, there always are a lot of auto repair shops out there.  Just make sure you pick the right one.
And how do you know that you've found the right auto repair shop?

Well, check them out.  Look at their qualifications.  Get the answers to some questions such as: are they licensed?  Have they been in business a while?  Do they have any certifications or awards?   What sort of repairs do they do there, and what do they "farm out" to other shops.  Remember, that if you want to keep your repair costs down, the more times a car or truck changes hands, the more money your repair is going to be.  That's why it is best to find someplace that does most, if not all of their work in house.  That way you know you're at the right auto mechanic in Peoria.

Be Smart With Your Money: Go to a Peoria Auto Repair Shop

Although you sometimes might be tempted to try auto repair jobs on your own, there is no doubt that a better decision is to take your car or truck to a qualified professional. A lot of surveys have been done, and one regret that keeps coming up is when car owners end up with a bigger problem with their car than they thought.  Consider if you will, your car is one of your most important investments.
Taking your car to a Peoria auto repair shop makes good financial sense.  Another reason to go to a shop, however, is the knowledge base than an auto mechanic will have.  Sometimes, a problem that seems to be small might be bigger than you think. For instance, if you car isn't starting, you might think that it is the wiring or the starter. However, you might just find out that there is a bigger problem with the engine that needs to be fixed.  So your starter or wiring may be fine, and you ended up shelling out money for a part that you didn't even need.  And some auto parts places are reluctant to take some parts back.

Go to a Mechanic For Knowledge as well as Experience

However, if you take your car or truck to the experts at an auto repair shop, you can be sure that they will analyze the problem more accurately. There is a reason why an auto mechanic in Peoria spends a lot of time studying.  They do it to become experts in identifying problems with your car's engine, power train, brakes, and exhaust system.
Auto mechanics have access to better tools and diagnostic equipment than you will have. Some tools are obviously cheap.  You can often buy a screwdriver or wrench at a dollar store.  However, other tools that you will find at an auto repair shop are prohibitively expensive to most people.  Some diagnostic equipment for example costs $1000 and up for each piece of equipment.
So remember, be smart with your money.  You could spend thousands on tools, education and licenses to open your auto repair shop in Peoria, AZ, or you could go to one that's established and let them work on your car or truck instead.

Auto Repair Myths and Tips

There is a myth floating around that if a cold has a lot of miles on it that it is not as good as a newer model car.  That isn't the case however, or more accurately it all depends on the car or truck in question.  For example, some Japanese cars such as Toyotas and Nissans don't even hit their stride until about 100,000 miles.  There are older model Toyotas and Nissans still on the road today that were new in the 1970's, and with well over a million miles on them. Ultimately, a car's actual mileage only matters with how well it's been maintained.  A car that has had scheduled auto service done on it like clockwork can easily outlast a newer car that the owner was lax about maintenance.  That's why scheduled auto maintenance is so incredibly important.
As we covered in a previous article, every car has a set series of steps that you have to take to keep them maintained.  Oil changes every 5,000 miles, batteries in Arizona: every three years, and so forth. However, it isn't just mileage marks you want to take note of.  Every now and then, check the tread on your tires.  If your tread is wearing thin,  you want to replace your tires before they are bald.  A bald tire is one that has the tread worn down to being non-existent.  You also want to make sure that you top off the air in your tires to make sure they're inflated to the proper PSI. Get yourself a tire gauge.  They're not too much money, and sometimes can even be found at a dollar store.   But what about auto repair tips?

Auto Repair Tips

From the Automotive Service Excellence web page, here are some tips to save some gas:
Monitor tires. Under inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder. (Let the tires cool down before checking the air pressure.) Out-of-line wheels, as evidenced by uneven tread wear, should be aligned by a professional.
Remove excess weight. Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle. Store only essentials in the trunk. Less weight means better mileage.
Consolidate trips and errands. Some trips may be unnecessary. Also, try to travel when traffic is light so you can avoid stop-and-go conditions.
Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.  [READ MORE]
So remember, your car has needs, just like you do.  So keep up your maintenance schedule, and get into an auto repair shop in Peoria, AZ to do it.
